According to Crown Land records waste had been disposed at the Dorrigo Landfill since 1911, when it was first gazetted for night soil disposal.
Bellingen Council took over operation of the site in the 1980s and formalised its status as a waste disposal facility.
The need for landfill has gradually dwindled with Council investing heavily in recycling.
Council selected Impact Environmental to prepare landfill closure plans – a key challenge that emerged was the lack of suitable clay for capping. Impact Environmental prepared an options report examining the potential for alternate capping, to ensure Council made an informed decision.
