Introduction
Sustainable development is no longer just
a pleasant sounding idea – it is now an essential aspect for
the long-term success of any social, economic or environmental development.
The NSW Government is therefore
very pleased to organise this year’s tour of Regional Sustainability
Seminars making the environment a key element of its job and economic
strategies.
This year's round of Seminars
will also coincide with the Year
of the Built Environment which aims to enhance understanding
about the issues of sustainability and the impact of the built environment
on the natural environment.
The NSW Regional Sustainability Seminars have now run successfully
every year since 2001. The delivery of positive sustainable initiatives
from both government and industry has seen these events held in
Wollongong, Port Stephens, Dubbo, Griffith, Coffs Harbour, Katoomba,
Orange, Wyong & Queanbeyan. Averaging approximately 100 delegates
per seminar, the evaluation has shown that involvement in this event
is great value for money, has ongoing business advantages and brings
substantial recognition to both the cities and host Councils.
Local government is again strongly
represented with the involvement of host Councils Shellharbour,
Lismore & Tamworth. Four NSW State Government agencies
are organising this year's round of Seminars. They are: Department
of Environment & Conservation; Department of Infrastructure
Planning & Natural Resources; Department of State & Regional
Development; and Department of Energy Utilities & Sustainability.
The State owned corporation, Country Energy has agreed to be a sponsor
of this years events.
