Case Studies

The following case studies provide a little more information about some of our projects...

Project - Glass Recycling Business Case
Client - Southern Councils Group

This Business Case explored the economies of transporting co-mingled recyclables to a materials recovery facility (MRF) in Nowra or Sydney versus the option of the collected recyclable material being delivered to the Eurobodalla MRF in Moruya. Further, the Business Case considered locally processing all collected glass and the possibilities for re-use of this material locally.

Project - Integrated Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy
Client - Broken Hill City Council

This Integrated Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy aimed to provide Broken Hill City Council with a direction for achieving waste minimisation through targeted planning and policy. The Strategy incorporated principles of sustainable waste management and details how Council can implement practices and policies consistent with local, state and national expectations. The review of waste operations, community and business surveys, landfill full cost accounting, a commercial waste collection business case and an organics processing tender were all components of this comprehensive 12 month project.

Project - Waste Strategy and AWT options
Client - Alice Springs Town Council

By identifying and discussing the strategic options for waste management in Alice Springs, this project aimed to provide a practical framework for future planning to achieve cost effective conservation of the current landfill. Part of this work involved the investigation of possible AWT solutions as well as increased recovery of recyclables and organics. The unique nature of the Alice Springs community and the remoteness from markets provided challenges that needed to be addressed in this study.

Project - Collection and Disposal of Wastes
Client - City of Canada Bay

This project involved the development of tender documents, co-ordination of the evaluation process and the development of contract documents for the collection and disposal of mixed waste, recyclables and organics. Canada Bay is an inner Sydney Council with a high proportion of multi unit dwellings, a high level of cultural diversity and well educated residents. The results have ensured that Council has a cost competitive and innovative waste collection and processing system.

Project - Waste Reduction and Sustainability Strategy
Client - North Coast Area Health Service

This Project involved the development of strategy to reduce waste, energy and water use among the 11 hospitals in the North Coast Area Health network. It included an area wide consultation and workshop facilitation as a key component of strategy development. The result was a series of actions that addressed waste recycling, sustainable procurement, energy and water efficiency and staff education.

Project - Waste Recycling and Product Procurement (WRAPP) Review
Client - Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water

The aim of the review was to determine how the Waste Reduction and Purchasing Policy (WRAPP) could be improved, and provide a set of options of varying depth and complexity for consideration by DECCW. The review included research into all relevant NSW Government documents as well as independent reports and available internal documents relating to the WRAPP, and research into latest practices in a number of other jurisdictions. A survey of WRAPP Contact Officers in the agencies and State Owned Corporations (SOCs) required to report under the WRAPP was also undertaken, along with consultation of other stakeholders such as representatives of the NSW Department of Services, Technology and Administration.

Project - Coffs Harbour Waste Management Conference
Client - Impact Environmental

This well-known event was first held in 1996 and has now become the pre-eminent waste management conference in Australia, being held annually in May. The Conference attracts over 350 delegates, many of whom are from Local Government. It has a strong trade exhibition and a program that features around 40 speakers from the waste industry in Australia and from overseas. Being located in a Regional area of Australia gives this Conference a distinct advantage for those who want to network with others in the industry.

Project - Waste Disposal and AWT
Client - The Hills Shire, Sydney

This project involved research into securing a short and long term solution for the disposal of wastes from The Hills Shire. IEC was the primary consultant to a Working Party, assisting in the development of options including landfill disposal and more advanced AWT solutions. IEC co-ordinated several field trips to waste facilities around Sydney and developed a strategic approach that will lead The Hills to become innovative and bold in addressing their waste management issues.
