The Event This was the first major 'Buying Green' conference to be held in Australia. The focus was on the 'purchasing end' of the loop with the event featuring case studies and presentations on how to get your organisation 'Buying Green'. A very popular Trade Exhibition showcasing the latest products and services was run in parallel to the conference, providing an excellent opportunity for promotion and networking. The Concept Green or environmentally preferred purchasing is becoming an issue of growing importance for many organisations and businesses. Whilst there is increasing pressure to develop and implement green purchasing policies and practices, it is difficult to know just how to go about it. Victorian local government are national leaders in green purchasing with over 55% formally committed to include environmental considerations in all purchasing decisions. This event provided a valuable opportunity to learn from the experiences of these and other organisations who are successfully implementing green purchasing programs. Green Purchasing A large percentage of organisations’ expenditure is on purchasing products. Adopting green purchasing policies and practices that give preference to recycled, greenhouse friendly and environmentally friendly products is an excellent way for organisations to use their purchasing power to demonstrate environmental awareness and a commitment to sustainability. The Format The Buying Green 2003 Conference included equipment demonstrations, trade exhibits, speaker presentations, workshops, forums, special interest meetings, poster displays and social events. A Conference Welcom Reception, Conference Dinner and the Field Trips were also included. Costs The conference fees were $495 for both days or $320 for the one day (inclusive of GST, excluding accommodation). |
